We had our second meeting today of Mercy Calling. It was well attended and we have four new members joining us in giving. Our group is now committed to giving $795. per meeting to an area charity. We had thirteen members turn in prayer partner cards and offer service for our selected charity. $790 was collected so far for our January charity. It is so heartwarming to be a part of a group of such caring people.
Mercy Calling members voted to support the group that Mary George shared about at the meeting. It is a St. Vincent de Paul project called Pack-a-Sack that supplies kid friendly food for children at Denham Oaks Elementary School who are food insecure to take home each Friday so they have food for the weekends. Currently the group is preparing food sacks for up to 32 children each week. They get some funding from the parent organization called One Community Now. Some food comes from the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry but there are usually kid friendly items that need to be purchased each week. Your donated funds will be used to purchase these food items.
Prayer is needed for these families that remain food insecure. Volunteers came forward to be substitute packers of the food for the children. Pack-a-Sack is required to participate in the Hunger Walk on April 7, 2018 to help raise funds for One Community Now organization that will be used to give grants to participating organizations like St. Vincent de Paul in Pasco County who prepare the sacks of food for the children. Our St. Vincent de Paul group is also expected to solicit a donor to sponsor the Hunger Walk and a vendor or craft booth that will set up on the day of the Hunger Walk.
At our meeting only two charities were put in the box. Betty Montgomery shared about the group called In The Wildflowers that offers women victims of childhood sexual abuse a Christ-centered healing retreat. This ministry would like to offer this to Spanish speaking women and need to purchase Spanish literature and DVD. The ministry needs people to hand out literature at conferences, brochure production, working at ministry fairs, talking about the organization, and facilitator training production. Prayers are needed for healing of participants and prayer for the facilitators. Even though this group was not selected this time for financial support if you have a heart for this ministry and would like to help please contact Cathy Hayter at [email protected].
Matthew Irwin thanked our members for the generous outpouring of prayer and funding his Young Disciples group is using to purchase necessary supplies for the new Montessori preschool program that will be starting up in the fall of 2018. An open house will be January 31, 2018 and you are invited to attend. This will give you a glimpse of how the program is set up. He brought with him a set of wooden sheep and shepherd that will be used in the program. This is how he described it to me recently.
“Catechesis of the Good Shepherd was founded in the 50's by two Italian laywomen, one a scriptural scholar and one an expert in Montessori education. Together they conceived of a simple, attractive method for sharing the richness of the Faith with children, who are uniquely capable of accepting the beauty of God's love. The program is presented in three levels, and includes time in the "Atrium," which is a quiet environment where children learn through tactile play.
Catechesis of the Good shepherd emphasizes quiet contemplation and -- imagine this -- "the enjoyment of God." The children hear Bible stories and watch them acted out with simple materials; they learn songs and prayers, and are encouraged to play quietly with simple and meaningful objects. One mother explained that CGS "cracked the code" of the Mass for her son, as he learned to become alert to the details of the liturgy: the significance of color, the names and purposes of the various vessels and tools on the altar.”

Today we met for the first meeting with 15 members present. We heard from three members about worthy causes in our community. Mary George told us about the Youth Ministry program needing a projector and screen as well as a storage bench, all for the new Youth Center at Our Lady of the Rosary. Betty Montgomery explained how the “In The Wildflowers” healing retreat helps women heal from the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. And Cheryl Hammond championed the Young Disciples new Montessori program for children 3-6 and the needs the program has to get up and running for Our Lady of the Rosary Parish.
The charity that received the most votes is the Young Disciples new Montessori program. Not only did you give $810 to this program but 10 of you are lifting this effort, children and teachers up in prayer from now until our January 16th meeting. Two of you offered service. It will be exciting to see what God does with our gifts to Him for this new program at Our Lady of the Rosary.
